ALFA NEWS

December 2017

A warm hello to all old and new friends of Alex & Lee and Greg. This is the first of our tri-annual newsletters. As you may know, Lee and I dreamed of giving back to the community through art experiences for young people. We are happy to report the accomplishments of the last year since the memorial for Lee Brooks on November 4, 2016.

We have been working hard, and are thrilled to share that Alex & Lee Fostering Art is a bonafide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, fully approved by the IRS. This year we have also finalized all the corporate documents required to run a non-profit, and created a board of directors to help govern the organization. I am the CEO/President, and we have enlisted Debra Delaney to act as the Secretary/Treasurer of the organization.

ART & ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

We have also taken big steps to move forward with creating and planning art enrichment programs for young people. With my co teacher, Artist Kit Skeoch, in the first weekend of November 2017 we taught a pilot program making art pieces with wire and found objects. The date was special in that it was the anniversary of Lee’s memorial last year, and it felt like Lee and many of you supporting this project were there in spirit.

This first workshop was inspired by the early work of Alex & Lee, using metal, beads and found items to create unique and personal works of art. The young folks did well with the projects, and Kit and I learned much for our next teaching project. We will be creating small kits of materials for making a unique piece either inspired by examples, or from the imagination of the student artists. We are including a couple of pictures from this workshop to share with you; it was truly inspiring and helped us see just how empowering our future workshops and programs can be for the foster youth we hope to reach.

We are excited to have a number of classes on the schedule for 2018. We made contact with a support organization for foster youth, Beyond Emancipation, in Oakland, CA. They embrace the importance of art experiences for young people. We are planning week long workshops for both spring break and summer of 2018. You can check the organization out at www.beyondemancipation.org.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD'S LIFE

We have also been thinking about and planning ways to raise funds to support the ongoing art workshops and events. Thank you so very much for your donations which have made our work this year possible.

Of course, we will be needing more funds to accomplish our planned trainings for 2018 and beyond. We are setting a goal of raising $200,000 over the next 12 months to get the organization on firm footing financially, facilitating our trainings for the many foster youths who can be transformed by our work. This would be created as an endowment, and would allow us to fund three week long workshops per year. We are currently speaking with people in the know to help us understand how to get that endowment setup properly.

In addition to the cash donations we solicit from our like-minded friends and family, we will be planning other fundraising events in 2018. Some ideas we are floating around are trunk shows with proceeds dedicated to the non-profit, online auction opportunities for special pieces in the collection, and also creating an item that is specifically dedicated to raising funds for an Alex & Lee project.
